UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Is’haq Al Hajri, an electrical engineering major with an energy business and finance minor, has been named the Penn State College of Engineering’s student marshal for the 2020 summer commencement. The commencement ceremony will be held virtually on Saturday, Aug. 15.

Al Hajri has selected David Salvia, associate teaching professor and director of academic affairs in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, as his faculty marshal.

The College of Engineering summer student marshal is selected from among all of the departments within the college for his or her outstanding academic achievement and contributions to engineering student life.

Al Hajri, of Muscat, Oman, is the son of Salim and Raiya Alhajri. He graduated from the Royal Guard of Oman Technical College in 2014. While at Penn State, Al Hajri was the recipient of the President’s Freshman Award, the President Sparks Award and the Evan Pugh Scholar Award. He also received a fully funded scholarship from the Ministry of Higher Education of Oman. As a student, he was also a member of the Omani Student Association at Penn State.

Al Hajri completed an internship with the Occidental of Oman Inc., in Oman, where he worked as a power systems engineer. In this role, he reviewed designs, calculated and simulated systems and delivered solutions and support for several projects.

After commencement, Al Hajri hopes to find employment with a top company in Oman and simultaneously pursue an online master of business administration degree.

Al Hajri said he was “very happy and surprised” to learn that he had been selected as the College of Engineering’s student marshal.

“My goal since I was in middle school has been to get to one of the best universities in the U.S. and being selected as the marshal is such a big honor,” he said. “I reached my goals and I am now ready to take the next step with great motivation. The education I got from Penn State made me ready to get in the industry and succeed.”
