UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — A student-led program designed to connect first-year Penn State communications students with opportunities and people in the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications will launch in early July.

The program, STUDENT COMMunity, features weekly virtual sessions about the resources and support available from the Bellisario College and at Penn State. In addition, student leaders will conduct separate weekly small-group sessions designed to introduce students to each other.

Sixteen upperclassmen from the Bellisario College were selected to lead the program, which is open to all first-year communications students participating in Penn State’s second six-week summer session. Details about initial programming and a link to register for STUDENT COMMUnity are both available online.

The program was envisioned and launched as the result of a collaboration among Bellisario College staff focused on alumni relations, career development, diversity and inclusion, and recruiting.

“The strength of the Bellisario College is our community — students, faculty, staff and alumni. We envision this program as a way to give first-year students a sense of that community, as well as a sampling all the opportunities and support that are available to them,” said Steve Sampsell, director of strategic communications for the Bellisario College. “We outlined the program and handed things over to a group of talented leaders. They honed and improved what we had in mind, and they’re anxious to share what they know.”

First-year students interested in the program must apply by July 1.
