Yoon has experience in leadership development, career development, organization development, needs assessment and evaluation of human resource development and organization development interventions. His scholarly work is focused on empowering individuals and organizations with human agency and hope. He and colleagues developed the Hope-Action Theory and the Hope-Action Inventory, which are being used in different countries as a framework and a tool to help individuals live fulfilling lives. His team received the International Innovation in Diversity Award in 2015 for the impact that the hope-centered career program made in an organization. Yoon earned his doctorate in workforce education and development from Penn State.
