UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Two Penn State entries were honored as national winners and another was recognized as a national finalist in the annual Mark of Excellence Awards, sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists.
Work produced by Penn State students was honored in three categories:
- Best All-Around Television Newscast: “Centre County Report,” national winner;
- Broadcast Sports Videography: Will Desautelle, national winner; and
- Sports Photography, Large School Division: James Leavy, national finalist.
The Mark of Excellence awards honor the best in student journalism. As such, judges were directed to choose only those entries they felt were outstanding work worthy of a national honor.
Judges can choose up to one national winner and two national finalists (runners-up) in each category. If the judges determined that none of the entries rose to the level of excellence, no award was given. Any category not listed has no winner.

Winners and finalists advanced to the national competition with first-place finishes in one of the SPJ’s 12 regional competitions.
First-place national winners will be recognized at the Excellence in Journalism 2020 conference, scheduled Sept. 10-12 in Washington, D.C.
