2020 Board of Trustees election results announced

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Six trustees were elected or appointed to serve on the Penn State Board of Trustees today (May 8).

University alumni re-elected incumbents Alice Pope and Jay Paterno, as well as Anthony Lubrano, who returns to the board for a new non-consecutive term. The board also re-elected Mark Dambly and Walter Rakowich as trustees representing business and industry, as well as Matt Schuyler as an at-large trustee. Their terms begin July 1 and will last three years.

Elections for trustees representing agricultural interests have been temporarily deferred due to the impacts of the novel coronavirus pandemic, with plans to hold the election when public health guidance allows for in-person caucusing and voting.

Mark Dambly. Mark Dambly was appointed to the Board of Trustees by Gov. Ed Rendell October 2010. A graduate of Penn State with a bachelor’s in real estate and insurance, he is president of Pennrose Properties, LLC, a Philadelphia-based real estate group. He also serves on the boards of directors of the Crozer-Keystone Health System and the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

Anthony Lubrano. Anthony Lubrano graduated from Penn State in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and in 1989 founded A.P Lubrano & Co., Inc., a Pennsylvania-based financial services and wealth management firm specializing in group retirement and financial planning. A lifetime member of the Alumni Association and a member of the Nittany Lion Club, Lubrano is also a former Penn State baseball player and helped fund the creation of the Medlar Field at Lubrano Park baseball stadium on the University Park campus.

Joseph “Jay” Paterno. First elected to the Board of Trustees by alumni in 2017, Jay Paterno is president of the consulting firm Blue Line 409 LLC. He spent 22 seasons coaching college football, including 17 years on the Penn State staff. He is a Mount Nittany Conservancy board member and attended the 2011 White House Community Leaders Forum.

Alice Pope. Alice Pope is an associate professor of psychology at St. John’s University and three-time Penn State alumna of the College of the Liberal Arts, holding a bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in psychology. Her research in child psychology is focused on developmental psychopathology, children’s peer relations and social cognitions. She was first elected to the Board of Trustees by alumni in 2014.

Walter Rakowich. Walter Rakowich was elected to the Board of Trustees in July 2014 representing business and industry. He earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1979 from the Smeal College of Business and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He is the retired CEO of Prologis, an industrial real estate company. He serves on the Real Estate Advisory Board of the Institute for Real Estate Studies in the Smeal College of Business and has been honored as an Alumni Fellow by the Penn State Alumni Association.

Matt Schuyler. Matthew Schuyler, chief human resources officer of Hilton Worldwide, was elected to the Board of Trustees as an at-large trustee in July 2015. He earned his bachelor’s in accounting from Penn State in 1987, and also holds an MBA in organizational behavior and human resources management from the University of Michigan. His Penn State volunteer service includes membership on the boards of visitors of the Smeal College of Business and the College of Information Sciences and Technology, as well as on the School of Hospitality Management Advisory Board. He has been a member of the National Academy of Human Resources, and was honored by the Penn State Alumni Association with an Alumni Fellow Award in 2013. 

Penn State's Board of Trustees is composed of six members appointed by the governor, nine members elected by alumni, six members elected by agricultural societies and six members elected by the board representing business and industry endeavors, one student trustee, one academic trustee, three at-large trustees, and the immediate past President of the Penn State Alumni Association. In addition, five members are ex-officio by right of their office, including Gov. Thomas W. Wolf (non-voting); Penn State President Eric J. Barron (non-voting); acting Secretary of Agriculture Russell C. Redding; acting Secretary of Education Pedro A. Rivera, and acting Secretary of Conservation and Natural Resources Cynthia A. Dunn.

The total distribution of the votes cast in the alumni election are listed below by the position of the candidates on the ballot.

3.     Alice W. Pope -- 13,205 

4.     Jeffrey P. Ballou -- 7,986
