Attention all Zoom users: New security settings to take effect on May 11

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Zoom-bombings have been making headlines across the country this spring, and Penn State is no exception to the increase in security threats and breaches. To address these recent incidents in Zoom meetings, University-wide Zoom default setting changes will be implemented on May 11.

Zoom users will need to complete the following steps, in order:

1. Download the latest version of Zoom on all devices or contact your local IT administrator to make sure you have the latest version of Zoom. As of May 30, all Zoom clients will require the latest download to join meetings. 

2. Review the full list of setting changes, a screencast, and other resources on the Zoom Security page on the Penn State Office of Information Security website to learn how to adjust Zoom settings. 

3. Remain vigilant when choosing to adjust the default settings in Zoom. If changes are made, be well versed in the best practices for handling Zoom-bombings. Check out and review your Zoom settings

“These measures are necessary to ensure that Penn State can continue to focus on our academic mission and to deliver quality programs, courses, and degrees virtually,” said Richard Sparrow, acting chief information security officer at Penn State. “The new Zoom default settings were carefully reviewed in determining the best course of action and will increase security measures for everyone at Penn State.”

Zoom also has taken steps to increase security for all users, including encryption changes, which were deployed in a recent update. These changes will benefit the University community to be in alignment with best practices at this time.

Several known Zoom incidents have been reported at the University since the shift to virtual instruction. These occurrences are being investigated and handled by the appropriate authorities.

Tech TAs are available to assist faculty, and Tech Tutors are also offering one-on-one consultations to provide additional technical support for staff and students.
