Graduate student award recipients lauded for achievements, excellence

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Graduate School at Penn State has announced the 2020 Graduate Student Award recipients, graduate students recognized each spring for their outstanding achievements and academic excellence in research, teaching, and service.

The award recipients are listed below, by award category.

— Academic Computing Fellowship: Michael Palumbo III, doctoral student in astronomy and astrophyics with a dual title in astrobiology

Intercollege Graduate Student Outreach Achievement Award: Thomas Nigl, doctoral student in materials science and engineering

Ardeth and Norman Frisbey International Student Award: Terry Torres Cruz, doctoral student in Plant Pathology with a dual title in biogeochemistry

Graduate Student Service Award: Claire Kelling, doctoral student in statistics with a dual title in social data analytics

Harold F. Martin Graduate Assistant Outstanding Teaching Award: Irenae Aigbedion, doctoral student in comparative literature; Sarah Chapman, doctoral student in Chemistry; Yang Deng, doctoral student in art education; Eric Disbro, doctoral student in French with a dual title in women's gender and sexuality studies; Karly Etz, doctoral student in art history; Jason Freeman, doctoral student in mass communications; Katherine Kerschen, doctoral student in German with a dual title in language science; Krista Leonard, doctoral student in kinesiology; Eric Mainzer, doctoral student in architecture; and Brett Neely, doctoral student in psychology.

Professional Master’s Excellence Award: Zsuzsanna Nagy, master's student in art; Lance Rautzhan, master's student in art education; and Isabella Salazar Jimenez, master's student in international affairs

Graduate Student Excellence in Mentoring Award: David Munoz, doctoral student in ecology

Graduate Student International Research Award: Marie Louise Ryan, doctoral student in geography

Distinguished Master’s Thesis Award: Ryan Naylor, master's student in recreation, park, and tourism management; Stella Murray, master's student in architecture; Shan Wang, master's student in information sciences and technology; and Danielle Massie, master's student in wildlife and fisheries science.
