LEHMAN, Pa. — Scholarships to Penn State Wilkes-Barre’s youth camps are available for local youth through a donation from the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Alumni Society. Applications will be accepted beginning March 1 on a first-come, first-served basis.

The need-based scholarships will provide six local children with the opportunity to take part in the campus’ educational and fun summer camp program.

The Penn State Wilkes-Barre Alumni Society supports the programs and activities of Penn State Wilkes-Barre and the surrounding community. The society’s support of the summer camp program through scholarships provides children with the opportunity to participate in the summer camps, which help build self-esteem, provide academic and athletic enrichment, increase motivation and socialization skills, and provide creative outlets in a fun setting.

“It is always an honor to help children attend a summer camp at the Wilkes-Barre campus,” said Penn State Wilkes-Barre Alumni Society President Jonathan Sinclair, a 2003 Penn State graduate. “The society looks forward each year to sponsoring these scholarships and hearing about the impact they have had on the children from our local community. The Alumni Society is continuously looking for ways to enhance the educational experience of both the public and students alike.”

Each year, Penn State Wilkes-Barre’s Office of Continuing Education oversees the Summer Youth Program, a unique day-camp experience for area youth ages 5–14 (grades one to nine, with a few camps going to grade 12). More than 30 camps are available and have been designed to provide children with academic, artistic and fitness enrichment within a friendly, safe, and encouraging environment. Camps for 2020 run June 22–26 and June 29–July 3. For details on the camps, visit Penn State Wilkes-Barre Summer Youth Camps.

“I am grateful for the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Alumni Society, which has been a supporter of our summer youth program for many years,” said Penn State Wilkes-Barre Director of Continuing Education Jane Ashton. “Through scholarships like this, we are able to provide the opportunity to children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds who otherwise may not be able to come.”

The scholarships are based on financial need and are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis to those who qualify. Those interested in applying should contact the Office of Continuing Education at 570-675-9253 for an application.

The Penn State Wilkes-Barre Alumni Society connects all Penn State alumni to each other and the University in the Wilkes-Barre area. For more information on the society, contact Karen Brace-Hodle at 570‑675‑9228 or klb14@psu.edu.
