UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Office of Physical Plant is reminding Penn Staters to use caution when traveling to, from and across campus this winter.
Tips for drivers
- Replace worn windshield wiper blades. Inspect tires for wear and proper inflation.
- Clear all ice, snow and dirt from windows, mirrors and lights.
- Clear snow from all vehicle surfaces. Snow sliding off the roof can block the windshield or be hazardous to other drivers.
- Know the condition of road surfaces. Reduce speed on bridges.
- Use headlights any time there is adverse weather conditions.
- Allow more time when traveling from place to place.
- Increase normal following distance to allow more time to stop on wet and icy roads.
Tips for pedestrians
- Wear appropriate footwear for winter conditions.
- Anticipate hazards as you walk. When you come to a corner, slow down.
- Remove snow from your shoes immediately after entering buildings.
- If you think a surface looks slippery, take short, sure steps instead of longer strides. Keep feet shoulder-width apart to increase stability.
- If you are carrying anything, make sure you can see over the top while you walk. Try to keep one hand free to use handrails on stairways.
- Be careful when getting into and out of vehicles. The first step can sometimes be the most hazardous. Use the vehicle for support and have both feet firmly planted on the ground before you stand.
- Pay particular attention when you are walking after dark. Drivers will have a difficult time seeing you. Be sure to wear light-colored or reflective clothing and carry a light.
