WYOMISSING, Pa. — In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 20, Penn State Berks students will volunteer in the local community and complete community service activities on campus in an effort to honor the life and legacy of the civil rights leader.
Throughout the day, students will prepare lunch for the clients of Opportunity House from 10:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., while another group will travel to the Olivet Boys & Girls Club on Clinton Street in Reading to assist with their MLK celebration from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
On campus, students will create items -- such as tie blankets, care kits, hats and scarves -- that will be donated to local agencies including the Berks County Intermediate Unit, Opportunity House, and Safe Berks from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Perkins Student Center Multipurpose Room.
These community service initiatives will be performed under the supervision of Autumn Fritz, assistant director of community development, who will challenge the students to think about themes from Martin Luther King Jr.'s messages and how they relate to serving these very different communities.
