  • Karly Ford, assistant professor of education (higher education) in the Department of Education Policy Studies, had three articles published in Educational Researcher (ER) in 2019. ER is the journal that all American Educational Research Association members receive. Two of the articles are Observer-Identification: A Potential Threat to the Validity of Self-Identified Race and Ethnicity" and “Pell Grant Versus Income Data in Postsecondary Research,” the latter of which was co-authored by Kelly Rosinger, assistant professor of education (education policy studies). The third article is in press.
  • Erica Frankenberg, professor of education (educational leadership) and demography, director of the Center for Education and Civil Rights, and an associate in the University's Population Research Institute, jumped 76 places to rank 87th in this year's RHSU Edu-Scholar Public Influence Rankings. Frankenberg has been on the list every year since 2015. For details, visit Penn State News. Frankenberg also was recently quoted in the article “Extremely Separate And Widely Unequal” on LAist.com.
  • Jeffrey A. Hayes, professor of education (counselor education) and associate head of the Department of Educational Psychology, Counseling, and Special Education, has helped run Penn State's Center for Collegiate Mental Health (CCMH) since its inception more than a decade ago. CCMH was featured in an article on the work being done by CCMH in the Jan. 14 edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education.
  • Royel M. Johnson, assistant professor of education (higher education), was recently selected as an Emerging Scholar by the American College Personnel Association, a comprehensive student affairs organization that engages students in learning and discovery. Johnson also has an article, "Examining the Academic Advising Experiences of Black Males at an Urban University: An Exploratory Case Study," in the current edition of Urban Education. His co-authors are Terrell L. Strayhorn, professor of urban education at LeMoyne-Owen College and president/CEO of Do Goodwork Educational Consulting LLC, and Christopher S. Travers, teaching assistant professor at North Carolina State University. In addition, Johnson has a new book chapter published in the third edition of “Student Engagement in Higher Education: Theoretical Perspectives and Practical Approaches for Diverse Populations.” His chapter is titled “Engaging Justice-Involved Students.”
  • Zoe Mandel and YangYang Wang, doctoral candidates in the Department of Education Policy Studies, recently won a dissertation award from the American Educational Research Association.
  • Research by the Center for Educational Disparities Research, directed by Paul Morgan, professor of education, is repeatedly cited in a new National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine report on using science and policy to advance health equity in the U.S. The report both cites and goes into detail on the center’s work and findings on evidence of the effectiveness of special education services in the U.S. as well as racial/ethnic disparities in disability identification.
  • David Passmore, distinguished professor of education (workforce education and development), has been appointed to the International Scientific Committee for the XXIII International Scientific Conference on "Construction in the Formation of Living Environment." The conference, sponsored by Moscow State University (Russian Federation), will be held in Hanoi, Vietnam, in April 2020. Passmore also has two new articles in Journal of Physics, Conference Series: “Using counterfactuals from macroeconomic models to assess risks to accomplishment of structural innovations,” co-authored by Borkovskaya, (2019); and “Probability theory in construction logistics” with E.A. Okunkova, I.V. Sharova, V.N. Burkov, I.V. Burkova, & Z. Daulbaeva.
  • Erica S. Weathers, assistant professor of education (education policy studies), has an article, "Bias or Empathy in Universal Screening? The Effect of Teacher–Student Racial Matching on Teacher Perceptions of Student Behavior" in the current edition of Urban Education.
