MEDIA, Pa. — Penn State Brandywine women’s basketball Head Coach Larry Johnson earned his 250th win with the team’s Dec. 11 victory over Bryn Mawr.
Now in his 14th season, Johnson has the most wins of any coach in Brandywine’s history and a 250-120 record. He has been selected as the Penn State University Athletic Conference coach of the year six times and has guided Brandywine to four conference championships.
Campus Athletic Director Bobbi Caprice, who played under Johnson during her four years as a Brandywine student, praised the coach for his commitment.
“Larry is so dedicated not just to women’s basketball, but to our entire athletic department,” she said. “He brings a great family environment to his program, and he always makes sure that academics are the number one priority.”
“He was the best coach I ever had,” she added. “He’s one of those guys who is tough on you, but you know he’s bringing out the best in you.”
Myeisha Matos, coordinator of athletics at Brandywine and another Johnson alumna, echoed Caprice’s view on his coaching style. Matos said he recruits student athletes who show potential to be successful on and off the court.
“He pushed me in a way that I don’t think I would have ever pushed myself,” she said. “He’s the type of coach I definitely needed. I’ve related so much of what he taught me to other parts of my life.”
Brandywine senior and team co-captain Nikki Velez said building a team is one of Johnson’s strengths.
“He’s a great coach and very humble about his success,” she said. “I’ve learned so much about basketball from him. He gives me advice on and off the court.”
In addition to his role at Brandywine, Johnson is active with other youth programs in the local community, including serving as vice president and immediate past president of the Media Youth Center.
