Annual multimedia exhibit showcases western Pennsylvania artists

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. — Artworks of varying mediums and artist skill level will be showcased at the East Suburban Artists League (ESAL) annual exhibit at Penn State New Kensington. The ESAL Holiday Show will begin Dec. 2 and will be featured until Dec. 27.

ESAL was formed in 1965 to serve artists in the suburban areas east of Pittsburgh throughout communities in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. The nonprofit organization aims to foster arts and crafts, as well as provide inspiration, education and encouragement to artists and patrons in the region.

“There are many individual artists that make up ESAL, and as a result, there are varied inspirations,” said Joy Anglin, show co-coordinator. “Many are inspired by the beauty of nature. Some are inspired by the human form and meaningful interactions between people and their environment. For some, art is intuitive, arising from internal motivations dictated by the senses.”

The December showcase will feature oil, watercolor and acrylic paintings, as well as photography, drawings, fiber arts, wood craft and mixed media. Many of the works will also be for sale.

“I hope that viewers take away an appreciation of the artistic talent that abounds in our community, as well as the usual enrichment of the senses one receives in viewing art,” said Anglin.

The exhibit, which opens Dec. 2 and runs through Dec. 27, can be viewed in the campus Art Gallery. The space is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. However, the gallery will be closed Dec. 24, 25 and 31 in observance of the Christmas and New Year’s Eve holidays. As with all shows in the gallery, there is no admission charge to view the exhibit.

In addition to the exhibit, members of the campus community and public are also invited to a special artist reception on Dec. 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. for a chance to see the newest exhibit and meet the artists.

Penn State New Kensington’s gallery features monthly multimedia works of local, regional, national and international artists. All exhibits are free to the public.
