Updates added to Penn State's 2FA service

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Updates to the new two-factor authentication (2FA) prompt that went live on WebAccess in June launched today (Dec. 3). Those required to use 2FA will notice new features to both the web and mobile versions of the prompt.

Upon logging in to WebAccess, users of 2FA will see a new 2FA prompt that will appear as a large, easy-to-use pop-up. Those with smartphones enrolled will be given three access methods: Push, Call or Passcode. Access through Push or Passcode is preferred because these methods do not generate an additional cost for the University.

While the functionality of the new 2FA prompt remains the same, new device management options have been included so users can add a new device or check their settings and devices directly in WebAccess.

Users are also now able to enroll and manage devices through a new 2FA device management page within the Account Management portal. Within the site, users may enroll, unenroll or rename a device, reactivate Duo Mobile, or change various settings related to the authentication process.

Furthermore, when a 2FA device is added, removed or modified in some way, users will receive an email notification alerting them to the change to protect against fraudulent activity.

Along with easier device enrollment, a new security checkup feature of the Duo Mobile app will now help users monitor and enhance the security of their cellphone or tablet by identifying potential security issues and notifying users if the software on their device is out of date when they use it to log in to WebAccess.

These updates to 2FA will increase security and improve user experience.
