UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Martin Luther King Jr. Student Committee has announced the theme for the 2020 MLK Jr. Commemoration Week at Penn State.
“The Story of U.S.: Exposing the Unarmed Truth” will celebrate King’s life and legacy through the week of Jan. 20-24.
The members of the committee said, “We choose to tell 'The Story of U.S.,' to be unyielding about the history of these United States and all who were involved in them, not just those who write our history books. This theme encompasses every student at Penn State, every person in this country and world. We invite this community to not only confront the injustices of this country, but to get to know who they are and what story they have to tell.”
The committee also announced the inaugural University-wide Poster Contest, an opportunity for all students to share their perspective on the theme through art. Previous posters have depicted a theme that will be displayed on t-shirts, buttons, and other promotional items.
Submissions are due Oct. 27. More information can be found here.
“This is an amazing opportunity to not only be recognized on a large scale for one’s artistic talents, but to also bridge social justice and art that will bring Dr. King’s messages to light," said the committee members, who encouraged all graphic designers, artists and anyone else who may be interested to participate in the contest.
