ESPN reporter set to visit Oct. 28 for Conversation Series

October 21, 2019

A Penn State alumna who covers the NHL for ESPN will return to campus next week for a session sponsored by the John Curley Center for Sports Journalism.

“A Conversation with Emily Kaplan” will begin at 7 p.m. Oct.  28 in 10 Sparks Building on the University Park campus of Penn State. The event is part of the Curley Center’s ongoing Conversation Series that features some of the biggest names in sports and sports media discussing timely matters of interest.

Emily Kaplan earned her journalism degree in 2013, and has worked for The Associated Press, The Boston Globe and Sports Illustrated during her career. She joined ESPN in 2017. Her work appears online and she also reports about the NHL and other topics on a variety of ESPN TV shows.

“It’ll be great to have Emily back at Penn State,” said John Affleck, the Knight Chair in Sports Journalism and Society and director of the Curley Center. “She’s a great example of a talented journalist who started in one platform — in this case, print — but has expanded into others. It’s especially good to host her just as the season starts on a campus that loves its hockey.”

Affleck will serve as moderator for the session, which is free and open to the public. The Q&A format encourages questions from the audience as well as the host.
