UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Reducing carbon emissions to combat rising global temperatures is a hot topic, but achieving deep decarbonization poses problems that require fundamental changes in the industrial, agricultural and energy sectors. The fall 2019 EarthTalks series, “The Dynamics of Deep Decarbonization,” brings prominent researchers to the Penn State University Park campus to discuss these changes. The series, which is free and open to the public, runs at 4 p.m. every Monday through Nov. 18, in 112 Walker Building.
EarthTalks is a semester-long interdisciplinary seminar series that seeks to engage the University and broader community in examining some of the complex environmental challenges facing the world today. The talks feature distinguished researchers and practitioners from Penn State and other universities, government agencies and nonprofit organizations.
The projected speakers are:
- Oct. 14 – Jae Edmonds, chief scientist and Battelle Fellow, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
- Oct. 21 – Hari Osofsky, dean of Penn State Law and Penn State School of International Affairs
- Oct. 28 – Klaus Lackner, director of the Center for Negative Carbon Emissions, Arizona State University
- Nov. 4 – Tom Richard, director of Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment
- Nov. 11 – Gary Geernaert, director of the Climate and Environmental Sciences Division, U.S. Department of Energy
- Nov. 18 – Leon Clarke, research director of the Center for Global Sustainability, University of Maryland
