HERSHEY, Pa. — Penn State Health initiated this week a national search for a president of Penn State Health Hampden Medical Center. The organization expects to follow shortly with initiation of a search for a chief nursing officer for its new Cumberland County hospital, which is on target to open in summer 2021.

The $200 million facility will feature 110 private inpatient beds, an emergency department, physician offices, various specialty inpatient services, imaging and lab services and general acute care medical and surgical capabilities. The hospital site also will include an attached outpatient medical office building.

The Hampden Medical Center president would oversee a workforce of approximately 650 full- and part-time clinical and support staff when the hospital first opens. The workforce is expected to grow to 1,000 within three years. Hampden Medical Center will feature an open medical staff, with a plan to develop collaborative programs between Penn State Health faculty physicians, community practice providers and independent community providers.

“Opening up a new hospital and onboarding the necessary workforce is a significant undertaking, especially one in such a dynamic and growing region like Cumberland County,” said Alan Brechbill, executive vice president for hospital operations, Penn State Health. “Our ideal president is someone with a unique skill set and experience who can develop a distinctive hospital program that will best meet the needs and interests of those in the region.”

Hampden Medical Center is being built on 44 acres in the Wentworth Corporate Center at the intersection of Good Hope and Wertzville roads near Interstate 81 in Hampden Township. The new facility will give residents of Cumberland and Perry counties, as well as the broader Harrisburg region, expanded local access to the high-quality, comprehensive, primary and specialty care services of Penn State Health without having to drive to Hershey.

Brechbill said the organization expects to name the Hampden Medical Center president early in 2020, and the president will play an integral role in hiring the chief nursing officer as well as additional leadership positions for the Hampden Township facility.

Penn State Health expects to start posting open positions for front-line clinical and support staff at Hampden Medical Center by January 2021.
