Penn State Hazleton to hold day of events for community Oct. 12

HAZLETON, Pa. — The public is invited to "We Are Day" at Penn State Hazleton, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12. The event is a chance for the Greater Hazleton community to visit the campus for a variety of free events and demonstrations.

We Are Day celebrates Penn State pride in the local community, showcases the resources of the campus and the University and brings attention to the talents of local groups as well as those of campus students, faculty and staff.

We Are Day is planned and overseen by the Penn State Hazleton Council, the campus advisory board, members of the Greater Hazleton Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association, members of THON, and representatives of various campus departments.

The event features activities for all ages, including entertainment, food, and health and educational components.

The schedule of events and their locations is as follows:

11 a.m.-3 p.m.

— Free scoops of choice of three Penn State Berkey Creamery ice cream flavors (chocolate, vanilla, Peachy Paterno); campus mall.

— Pickup for pre-ordered half-gallons of Penn State Berkey Creamery ice cream; freezer truck on campus mall. Limited quantities of half-gallons will be sold.

— Concession sales such as hot dogs, chicken bites, funnel fries, chips, water and soda; campus mall.

— Photos with the Nittany Lion; campus mall. Those wanting to get photos should bring their own camera or smartphone.

— THON information and support station; campus mall. Help Penn State students support families affected by pediatric cancer and researchers seeking for a cure for cancer. Penn State Hazleton THON will be selling Boscov’s shopping passes, tickets for bag Bingo and Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

— Campus bookstore open selling a variety of Penn State-themed merchandise and pre-signed copies of the Nittany Lion book series. Author Denise Kaminsky will be on hand to sign copies of her children’s “Nittany Lion” series books, which will also be for sale.

— Educational exhibits, Pocono Greyhound Adoption, PawsAbilities seeing-eye puppies in training, and Penn State Master Gardeners; campus mall.

— Sustainability education stations with hands-on experiments to teach concepts of sustainability; campus mall. On loan from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, the themes of the interactive exhibits include "Complete Streets," "Extreme Weather," "Hidden Cost Café" and "Tiny Slimy Carbon Keepers."

— Children’s make-it, take-it crafts with the Hazleton Art League; campus mall. Parents must accompany their children.

— Tie-dye shirt making for children; campus mall. Parents must accompany their children.

—Kid’s make-your-own mini fish tank with live fish provided; campus mall. Parents must accompany their children.

— Mega-games hosted by the athletics department and student-athletes; sports and recreation field.

— Alumni group information stations with details about the Penn State Hazleton Alumni Chapter and Society; campus mall.

— Continuing Education exhibits with information on classes and seminars along with health and education stations with faculty and students in the practical nursing program; campus mall.

— DJ Bob Tier playing music and providing entertainment; campus mall.

11 a.m.-1 p.m.

—Basketball scrimmage, clinic and foul-shooting contest, run by Penn State Hazleton’s men’s and women’s basketball coaches and student athletes; Dr. Thomas M. Caccese Gymnasium in the Physical Education Building.

11:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

— Penn State Hazleton cheerleading clinic, followed by a demonstration; campus mall and gym.

Noon and 2 p.m.

—Campus tours led by student Lion Ambassadors; register at the welcome booth on the campus mall.

1:30-2:15 p.m.

— Live cooking show, demonstration by Penn State Chefs Athan Spanos and Danielle Ruggiero with samples for participants; Evelyn Graham Academic Building lobby.

1:30-2:30 p.m.

— Live musical review by the PA Theater of the Performing Arts (PTPA); campus mall.

All activities will be held rain or shine, with most outdoor events moved indoors to the Graham, Butler and Physical Education buildings in inclement weather.

Accessible parking with transportation on golf carts is available in the lot outside the Physical Education Building.
