UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Paul Daniel Marriott, an associate professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at Penn State, is the featured speaker at an event on Oct. 19 in Milwaukee that celebrates the design of the historic Lake Park by Frederick Law Olmsted, as well as other notable landscapes in the area.

Hosted by the Lake Park Friends, “Beyond the Olmsted Legacy: Valuing Lake Park and Other Historic Milwaukee Landscapes” will explore not only Olmsted’s design of the 138-acre park on the shore of Lake Michigan in 1889, but will also look to the future of the park and other historic areas that distinguish Milwaukee County’s long commitment to exceptional green spaces.

Considered the father of landscape architecture, Olmsted is famous for designing a number of well-known urban parks, including Central Park in New York City, as well as communities, parkways and university campuses. He also was an early activist in the conservation movement.

Marriott is recognized as a national leader in historic preservation, having been awarded a prestigious Fitch Foundation Fellowship in 2009, and is also known as a global expert on historic roads. He was appointed to the board of trustees for the National Association for Olmsted Parks in 2016.

Details about the event can be found on the Lake Park Friends website.
