UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The public is invited to join staff and volunteers of the Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, for its annual Community Day event. This year’s theme, “Bridging Art and Culture,” invites visitors to come out for a variety of programs that inspire creativity and reflect on the active role of art in shaping culture and change.
The museum’s fall exhibitions explore a diverse array of artists from 19th-century France to the Harlem Renaissance, Bauhaus movement, and more. Programs built around the exhibitions include gallery talks and tours, as well as art-making activities such as a button-making station, a magnetic poetry wall, and a project that examines the relationships between colors. Throughout the day, there also will be a 50% to 75% discount on select items at the Museum Store.
Generous support for Community Day is provided by the collaborative initiative of Art Bridges, the Terra Foundation for American Art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, as well as by the Friends of the Palmer Museum. Friends receive benefits such as invitations to members-only events and receptions and a 10% discount at the Museum Store, and membership provides support for events like Community Day. Information on how to become a Friend of the Palmer Museum will be available throughout the day.
Community Day is open to the public for participants of all ages.
About the Palmer Museum of Art
The Palmer Museum of Art on the Penn State University Park campus is a free-admission arts resource for the University and surrounding communities in central Pennsylvania. With a collection of 9,600 objects representing a variety of cultures and spanning centuries of art, the Palmer is the largest art museum between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays. The museum is closed Mondays and some holidays.
The Palmer receives state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and from the Central Pennsylvania Convention and Visitors Bureau.
