UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State's Student Programming Association (SPA) Lectures Committee has announced a free lecture by Kenyette Barnes and Robin Givens, to be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10, in the HUB-Robeson Center’s Heritage Hall, University Park. The event is a collaboration with Penn State’s Gender Equity Center.
Barnes is a political strategist, lobbyist and the national co-founder of the #MuteRKelly movement as well as a speaker on the topics of anti-human trafficking, domestic abuse and sexual violence, HIV advocacy and voter’s rights. She was honored by the City of Philadelphia City Council and the City of Detroit City Council respectively for her efforts with #MuteRKelly,
Givens is a well-known actress appearing in many television shows and films since her breakthrough role in ABC’s "Head of the Class" in 1986. Most recently, she garnered starring roles in The CW’s "Riverdale and ABC’s "Once Upon a Time," and guest-starred on TBS’s "Tyler Perry’s House of Payne."
Givens is the co-chair of the Women Who Care organization, and published a book in 2007 titled "Grace Will Lead Me Home," focusing on her experience with domestic abuse and relationships. She is a speaker on the topic of domestic violence awareness and encourages others to be educated on its prominence in society.
The lecture is free for all students with a valid Penn State University Park student photo ID and is funded by the student-initiated fee.
Tickets are required for this lecture and are available for Penn State students to pick up in the SPA office, 226 HUB-Robeson Center, and in the Gender Equity Center, 204 Boucke Building. Students can receive up to two tickets per photo ID. Tickets for the general public are available starting Thursday, Oct. 3.
