Free screening of HBO documentary 'Student Athlete' set Oct. 7

Session includes discussion with co-producer/director, cinematographer and two faculty members

A screening of the HBO documentary “Student Athlete” and a panel discussion with the co-producer/director of the film its cinematographer and two Penn State faculty members will be conducted at 7 p.m. Oct. 7 in Carnegie Cinema.

The session is free and open to the public.

“Student Athlete” is an examination of the complex rules of amateur athletics in the United States and how they affect uncompensated athletes and their families. From LeBron James and Maverick Carter’s SpringHill Entertainment and Steve Stoute’s United Masters, the feature-length presentation is directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Trish Dalton. The film will debut at 10 p.m. Oct. 2 on HBO.

Participants in the panel discussion will be: Dalton; cinematographer John Sears; lawyer Tim Nevius, advocate for student-athlete rights; and Bellisaro College faculty members Pearl Gluck, assistant professor of film-video, and John Affleck, Knight Chair in Sports Journalism and Society and director of the John Curley Center for Sports Journalism.

The event is sponsored by the Department of Film-Video and Media Studies with support from the Curley Center.
