Sesame Street 50th anniversary celebration to include activities, games for kids

WPSU to host free event on Sept. 21 with educational activities, games and crafts for children, a touch-a-truck area, selfie stations and prizes

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Centre Region is invited to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Sesame Street with a day full of kids and family activities from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21. 

Sesame Street: 50 Years and Counting, hosted by WPSU Penn State, will be held at the WPSU Studios located at 100 Innovation Blvd. in State College. The free event will include educational activities, games and crafts for children, a touch-a-truck area, selfie stations and prizes, and is sponsored by Aetna Better Health of Pennsylvania. Sesame Street debuted on Nov. 10, 1969, and has aired on public television since its first broadcast.

WPSU educational activities include:

  • Abby Cadabby’s Appy Hour (WPSU, PBS KIDS and Sesame Street apps).
  • Big Bird’s Comfy Cozy Nest (mindfulness).
  • Hooper’s Healthy Eating Store (sometime and anytime foods activity).
  • Puppet Playhouse (make a puppet and put on a show).
  • Slimey’s Sorting Game (recycling and the environment).
  • The People in Our Neighborhood (vehicle display).
  • What Does the Post Office Do? (stamp activities).
  • Sesame Street Memories Board (write your memories).

The Bakery at Penn State will also present a handcrafted Sesame Street 50th anniversary character cake and offer free chocolate chip cookies to attendees.
