Penn State Health’s Pride event on Aug. 21 featured speakers, ice cream and a more respectful and inclusive way of talking to one another.
Corey Kronman, president of Penn State College of Medicine’s Pride student group, joined speakers Deborah Berini, president of the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, and Rachel Levine, Pennsylvania Secretary of Health.
Kronman told the crowd of roughly 250 about the college’s new Pronoun Campaign. Coming soon to campus, the program reminds everyone to be careful with language and not make assumptions about how to refer to one another.
“The campaign encourages people to introduce themselves with their preferred pronouns, such as ‘Hi, I’m Lynette, she/her pronouns,’ and ask people what pronouns they prefer. If a preferred pronoun isn’t known, use ‘they’ or ‘their’,” said Lynette Chappell-Williams, chief diversity officer at Penn State Health and associate dean for diversity, equity and inclusion at the College of Medicine.
