Math major represents Eberly College of Science as summer 2019 student marshal

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Charles Diaz, of Wyndmoor, was honored as the student marshal for the Eberly College of Science during Penn State’s summer commencement ceremonies Aug. 10 on the University Park campus. Diaz’s faculty escort for the commencement exercises was Luen-chau Li, professor of mathematics.

“I am extremely honored to be chosen as the student marshal for the Eberly College of Science,” said Diaz. “It is very meaningful to receive such a great recognition.”

Diaz graduated with a 3.98 GPA and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. He was a member of the dean’s list every semester since he began his undergraduate career at Penn State as a transfer student in spring 2017. He also received the President’s Freshman Award in 2018 and the Kermit C. Anderson Memorial Award, which recognizes outstanding undergraduate students enrolled in mathematics, in 2018 and 2019.

In addition to his academic studies, Diaz also pursued his passion for equestrianism, working as a rider and groomer at a private farm in Unionville. After graduation, Diaz plans to apply for mathematics positions within industry and government.

“I have many great memories with my friends and professors at Penn State,” said Diaz. “But what is most meaningful for me was being able to finish my degree. Even though I struggled over the last year, I found a way to move forward and accomplish my goals.”

Diaz, a graduate of Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia, was accompanied at commencement by his mother, Elizabeth Price; father, Leonardo Diaz; stepfather, David Lamb; and brother, Stuart Diaz.
