HUB Galleries present 'A Meditation on this Age of Struggle and Strife'

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The HUB-Robeson Galleries will present "A Meditation on this Age of Struggle and Strife," a solo exhibition of drawings and sculptures by Penn State Associate Professor of Art Rudy Shepherd, in Art Alley on the first floor of the HUB-Robeson Center.

The exhibition runs through Nov. 10. A free, informal reception will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Sept. 12 in Art Alley.

Shepherd's art reflects news from 2017 to the current day. On display are nearly 100 faces and events from recent years — including figures such as Megan Rapinoe, Bree Newsome, Antwon Rose, Kamasi Washington, John McCain and Lil Peep — alongside a monumental sculpture titled "Black Rock Negative Energy Absorber." Shepherd said the work in the exhibition examines the “dark side of human nature, that part of all of us that cause us to mistreat and distrust one another.”

Art Alley is an open space where students are encouraged to spend time or study with friends while being surrounded by art. The galleries welcome classroom visits and offer student-led tours as well.

“I have worked at Penn State for the last eight years, and I am fascinated by the diversity of students and faculty from all over the country and all over the world, with so many different interests, expertise and points of view," Shepherd said. "Having the opportunity to present my work in such a public way to this group of people fascinates me. I hope that I have an opportunity to hear from many different people with many different ideas about what this work is about, and which stories they remember and have ideas about from the last two very tumultuous years."

The galleries are free and open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information on this and other exhibitions, contact the HUB-Robeson Galleries at 814-865-2563, or visit the galleries' website.
