HERSHEY, Pa. — A donation will allow Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center and its partner, Penn State Berks, to establish a nursing simulation lab on St. Joseph’s downtown Reading campus.

John Langan and his wife, Judith Nadell, of Voorhees, New Jersey, donated $425,000 to create the nursing education and simulation lab, which will mimic real clinical scenarios through the use of electronic mannequins.

Programs at the new lab will train St. Joseph nurses to help improve patient outcomes, enhance clinical competence, and increase interdisciplinary collaboration.

The lab will be located in the Langan Allied Health Academy in the lower level of St. Joseph’s downtown campus at Sixth and Walnut streets. The Langans founded the academy with a $1 million donation in 2005.

It is scheduled to open for its first cohort of practical nursing students in August.

The funding also will be used to create the Mae Langan Nursing Awards, in honor of John Langan’s mother, a 1934 graduate of St. Joseph’s former School of Nursing. The award will be presented every May during the next five years.
