UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State President Eric J. Barron wrote an op-ed article this week for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review about the important role universities play in fostering discovery, entrepreneurship and economic development.

Penn State is hosting higher education leaders for APLU research and economic engagement meetings.

He writes that universities “contribute talent development, provide advice to the private sector and advance community development — all of which contributes to an ecosystem ripe for innovation. This not only benefits people’s everyday lives, but it also plays a critical role in strengthening and growing our economy. As these businesses grow, they create jobs and support the communities and states in which those businesses are located.”

As chair of  the Commission on Economic and Community Engagement (CECE) for the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU), Barron is working with universities and government partners to identify key areas crucial to maximizing the impact of public research universities.

Barron will host higher education leaders from across the country this week as part of the APLU 2019 joint summer meeting for CECE and APLU’s Council on Research.
