Penn State Health and Geisinger Holy Spirit expand access to neurosurgical care

Penn State Health and Geisinger Holy Spirit are working together to expand access to high-level neurosurgical care for people in the West Shore region. The organizations have signed a physician services agreement that calls for Penn State Health neurosurgeons and advanced practice providers to provide clinical and surgical care to patients at Geisinger Holy Spirit. The clinicians will perform outpatient and inpatient procedures, and provide full-time consultative, emergency and trauma neurosurgery care at Geisinger Holy Spirit starting July 1.

For the past two years, Dr. Diana Jho, a Penn State Health neurosurgeon, has provided care at Geisinger Holy Spirit as a member of the hospital’s medical staff and held clinic hours at Penn State Health Medical Group – Camp Hill. As of July 1, her clinic will move to the neurosurgery clinic in the American Office Center at 423 North 21st Street in Camp Hill adjacent to the Geisinger Holy Spirit Hospital. Penn State Health has recruited additional neurosurgeons to care for patients at Geisinger Holy Spirit. They are expected to start in the fall.

“Patients in Cumberland, Dauphin and Franklin counties will benefit from our world-class neurosurgeons working alongside the skilled nurses and anesthesiologists at Geisinger Holy Spirit to perform a wide range of neurosurgical procedures, including spine neurosurgery, cranial neurosurgery and peripheral nerve surgery,” said Dr. Robert Harbaugh, chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Penn State Health and senior vice president of Penn State Health Medical Group.

Geisinger Holy Spirit first credentialed Penn State Health neurosurgeons in 2017 to care for patients as members of the hospital’s open medical staff, which enables community-based physicians and doctors from other hospitals and health systems to work in collaboration with Geisinger Holy Spirit physicians and staff.

“We are excited about having the Penn State Health neurosurgery team on-site at Geisinger Holy Spirit Hospital and know that these providers and the patients we care for together will continue to have an excellent caring experience in our hospital,” said Kyle C. Snyder, Geisinger Holy Spirit chief administrative officer.

“Even as construction continues on Penn State Health Hampden Medical Center, we wanted to take more immediate steps to expand our inpatient capacity and increase access and convenience for people on the West Shore who need expert neurosurgical care,” said Steve Massini, executive vice president and chief administrative officer of Penn State Health, who will assume the role of CEO this summer.
