UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — We Are Weekend is approaching quickly, but there's still time to register for the Alumni Association's premier summer event set for May 31 through June 2.
The College of Education has a few events planned, including a celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Serviceman's Readjustment Act, commonly known as the first GI Bill. From 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 1, gather in the Krause Learning Space on the second floor of Chambers Building to share stories, view memorabilia and engage in conversation with those who have benefited from the GI Bill and experts who continue to study its unprecedented impact. Join Higher Education Program Alumni Council members as they recognize the many ways in which Penn State and individual Penn Staters continue to benefit from the close relationship between military service and the University.
The session includes comments from Alicia Dowd, professor of education (higher education), and director and senior scientist for the Center for the Study of Higher Education (CSHE), who will recognize the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the CSHE and the 70th anniversary of the Higher Education Program; Roger Geiger, distinguished professor emeritus of education, with a review and critique of the original GI Bill; Roger Williams, retired executive director of the Penn State Alumni Association and a Distinguished Alumnus of the College of Education, on the immediate impact of the GI Bill on Penn State in the mid- to late-1940s; Eugene McFeely, senior director for Veterans Affairs and Services at Penn State, on present ties between Penn State, the military and modern-day veterans; and Arnold Gasche, State College community member and Penn State alumnus, with his personal reflections on the ties between Penn State and military service over time.
Also planned for Saturday morning is a College of Education scavenger hunt, which starts on the Chambers Building Portico (entrance facing Pattee Library), at 9 a.m. Once checked in, participants will receive a passport to visit some of the college's newest spaces: the Dr. Edwin L. Herr Clinic, the Chambers Building Science Wing and the Keller Building art gallery. Completed passports can be turned in by 11 a.m. in the Krause Learning Space to receive a prize.
Registered College of Education alumni also are welcome to attend a luncheon at noon Friday, where Dean David H. Monk will provide an update on the college.
