Penn State Smeal alumnus receives Charles Lupton Volunteer Award

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State Smeal College of Business alumnus Ronald E. Sloan recently received the 2019 Charles Lupton Volunteer Award from Penn State’s Division of Development and Alumni Relations.

The award ― one of the University’s highest honors for a volunteer ― recognizes outstanding volunteer service to Penn State, the Division of Development and Alumni Relations, and the greater community.

“Penn State would not be what it is today without outstanding volunteers,” said David Lieb, senior associate vice president for development. “Ron has worked tirelessly on behalf of Penn State and the Smeal College for more than a decade, and I cannot think of a more deserving recipient of this year’s award.”

Sloan, a 1970 graduate in accounting, is currently a member of Smeal’s Accounting Advisory Board and Alumni Society Board. Sloan also is a member of the executive committee of the Smeal Club Pittsburgh.

He has been a part of two capital campaigns. He was chair of Smeal’s fundraising effort following the “For the Future” campaign and currently serves on Smeal’s volunteer campaign committee for the “A Greater Penn State for 21st Century Excellence” fundraising campaign.

“There’s no one who is more generous with his time or more dedicated to our success,” said Michelle Houser, senior director of development and alumni relations for the Smeal College. “Ron truly embodies the culture of philanthropy and service that Penn State is known for, and I consider it an honor to work with him to advance Smeal’s mission.”

In 2015, Sloan was honored with the Service to Smeal Award for his outstanding service to the college through volunteer activities and efforts that enrich the college community. He also was named Smeal Accounting Alumnus of the Year, in 2016.

“Ron exemplifies the kind of volunteer you want working with your organization,” said Jen Crispell, director of alumni relations for the Smeal College. “His professional accomplishments are impressive, but it is his personality and desire to make Penn State and Smeal a better place that speaks volumes about the kind of person he is.”

When accepting his award, Sloan offered his sincere thanks to the University.

“Penn State has a terrific reputation, but what we need to concentrate on now is the future,” he said. “It is an honor to serve with you as we try to move not only Smeal, but the University, forward.”
