STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Penn State's Sustainability Institute will present a free film screening showcasing an inspiring mix of documentary, drama, animation and slam-poetry films that relate to visions of the future and the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21, at the State Theatre, located at 130 W. College Ave. in downtown State College, the event offers inspiration for viewers to reflect on how we are approaching and responding to sustainability opportunities and challenges as a society.

The screening is part of the schedule for the International Town & Gown Association’s 2019 ITGA City & University Relations Conference, and is open to the public.

"Penn State is excited to host colleagues from around the world who are working to build sustainable partnerships with their community neighbors," said Peter Boger, assistant director for community outreach and engagement at Penn State's Sustainability Institute.

Stories about discarded clothes from the West getting a new life in India ("Unravel," 2012), heroes in Flint who are tackling the ongoing water supply and health crisis ("For Flint," 2017), and a fictional environmental refugee displaced by a climate disaster ("That Which Once Was," 2011) are three of nine films included in the 97-minute screening.

"This film screening provides a perfect example of an event to build community — welcoming and open to the public — that can inspire town-gown collaborations working on behalf of a sustainable future," said Boger. "These short films are by turns funny, moving, frightening and inspiring, and we invite everyone to join us."
