The American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) has endowed a scholarship in engineering at Penn State Hazleton through its contribution of $50,000.
The American Society of Highway Engineers Northeast PA Scholarship will be awarded to students with an interest in engineering. First preference will be given to students who have a demonstrated interest in civil engineering, surveying engineering, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering or hydraulics engineering whose home address is in Luzerne, Lackawanna, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne or Wyoming counties.
“American Society of Highway Engineers Northeast Penn and donors to the Penn State Hazleton endowment recognize the value and importance of supporting civil engineering students along their educational journey both financially and through stewardship of the highway engineering profession,” said Dominic Yannuzzi, project manager for Alfred Benesch and past president, director at large and golf tournament and scholarship director for ASHE.
Campus Director of Development Christen Reese said, “We are grateful for the partnership with ASHE Northeast Penn to support students from the local region in engineering. Having the support of a local engineering group is particularly meaningful to our students who are from the area and interested in pursuing an engineering education and career.”
The initial $50,000 commitment from the organization received a 1:1 match from a recently concluded program created to encourage donors to create their first endowed scholarship at Penn State, for a total endowment of $100,000. The endowment will continue to grow through support from the ASHE’s golf tournament, scheduled for June 27 this year. This is the second scholarship funded by the American Society of Highway Engineers at Penn State Hazleton. The first, The American Society of Highway Engineers – Charles Mattei Memorial Scholarship, was an annually funded scholarship established in 2015 for engineering students at Penn State Hazleton, Penn State Scranton and Penn State Wilkes Barre. Seven students benefited from the scholarship at the three campuses.
