Penn State York honored its student-athletes and coaches at the annual Sport Awards Banquet on Thursday, April 18, on the stage of the Pullo Family Performing Arts Center (The Pullo Center) on campus. Following a 6 p.m. dinner, members of each athletic team were introduced, coaches provided highlights of the season, and awards were presented.

Trimmer Award
Derrick Hoffman, Manchester, Pennsylvania, men’s basketball, received the 2018-19 Trimmer Award in basketball. The Trimmer Award is named in honor of the late former Penn State York Basketball Coach, Ron Trimmer, and is given to the most improved player.
Broadbent Award
Jack Jaramillo, White Hall, Maryland, soccer, received the Broadbent Award given in honor of Bruce Broadbent, former assistant professor of kinesiology at the campus and division head of health and human development at the Commonwealth College. Broadbent was the campus’ first athletic director and worked for more than 30 years to promote the campus’ athletic programs.
Christopher C. Miller Sportsmanship Award
Cameron Caple, Glenville, Pennsylvania, soccer, received the 2018-19 Christopher C. Miller Sportsmanship Award for soccer. This award is given to an athlete who displays a high level of sportsmanship not only on the soccer field but also in everyday life. The award was established in 2002 to honor the late Christopher C. Miller, the son of former Penn State York Soccer Coach George Miller, who died on July 9, 2001, at the age of 16. During his soccer career, Christopher played between 350 and 400 soccer games and never received a yellow or red card for unsportsmanlike play. His love of the game of soccer and outstanding sportsmanship will always be remembered through this award.
Heart and Hustle Award
Charizma Johnson, York, Pennsylvania, women’s basketball, and Janelle Kress, Littlestown, Pennsylvania, women’s basketball, received the Heart and Hustle Award. This award is voted on by the players on the women’s basketball team, and is given to the player or players that exemplify the meaning of heart and hustle, leave it all out on the court, have a positive attitude every practice and game, never complain, never gives up, will do whatever is deemed necessary to help the team be successful, and embody the core values of sportsmanship.
Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) Awards
Cameron Caple, Glenville, Pennsylvania; soccer; Janelle R. Kress, Littlestown, Pennsylvania, women’s basketball; Lillian, Levan, York, Pennsylvania, women’s volleyball; Raymond J. O’Dwyer, Lutherville, Maryland, men’s basketball; and Brent Williams, Mount Wolf, Pennsylvania, golf; received the John Fritz Sportsmanship Award. The John Fritz Sportsmanship Award is given by the Penn State University Athletic Conference in honor of John Fritz, retired PSUAC commissioner, who was considered the epitome of a team player and who had a true love for the Blue and White. The award recognizes excellent sportsmanship.
Juston Luton, York, Pennsylvania, earned 1st Team All-Conference, men’s basketball, and Michael Ambrose, Stewartstown, Pennsylvania, earned 2nd Team All-Conference, soccer.
United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Awards
Anthony Bennett, Middletown, Pennsylvania, was named to the USCAA All-Tournament Team in men’s basketball, and Juston Luton, York, Pennsylvania, received the USCAA 2nd Team All-American Award in men’s basketball.
Chancellor’s Award for Academic Character
The final award of the evening, the Chancellor’s Award for Academic Character, was given to Jonathan Gillespie, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a member of the men’s basketball team. This award is given to the student-athlete with a 3.5 grade-point average (GPA) or higher, who, in addition to an outstanding GPA, upholds the five core values of the Penn State York Athletic Department, accountability, courage, diligence, integrity, and respect.
