Behrend track teams dominate home invitational

Penn State Behrend’s track and field teams dominated the Behrend Invitational on April 20, winning 13 events in both the men’s and women’s divisions. Both teams will compete in the Colonial States Athletic Conference championships on May 4.

The college’s baseball, softball and golf teams also were in action last week. Here are the highlights:

Baseball

  • Penn State Behrend 11, Penn State Altoona 6
  • Penn State Altoona 16, Penn State Behrend 10
  • Penn State Behrend 9, Pitt-Bradford 8
  • Penn State Behrend 10, Pitt-Bradford 2

Pitcher Phil Myers, a senior from DuBois, recorded his 150th career strikeout in the nightcap against Pitt-Bradford. Scott Sada, a senior from Saegertown, and Zack Bowen, a freshman from Plum, each hit a triple against Penn State Altoona.

Softball

  • Penn State Behrend 9, Pitt-Greensburg 2
  • Penn State Behrend 10, Pitt-Greensburg 6

AJ Nichols, a senior from Pittsburgh, pitched a complete game in the opener, striking out four batters. Carson Hauser, a senior from Westfield, New York, scored three runs.

Men’s track and field

Colby Tarr, a senior from Uniontown, won the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles events at the Behrend Invitational. He also won the javelin competition.

Women’s track and field

Emily Mischen, a freshman from Gibsonia, won the shot put, discus and hammer throws at the Behrend Invitational. Haley Yenchik, a senior from Cecil, won the pole vault, the long jump and the 100-meter dash.

Men’s golf

  • Fifth (of six teams) at the Mercyhurst Spring Invitational

Daniel Thomas, a sophomore from Moon Township, shot a 76 and tied for sixth place on the first day of the Mercyhurst Spring Invitational. The second day of the event was canceled due to inclement weather.

Women’s golf

Marissa Lynch, a sophomore from Plum, shot a 97 on the first day of the Gannon Spring Invitational. The second day of the event was canceled due to inclement weather.
