Lucy R. McClain, a College of Education alumna and current director of Shaver's Creek Environmental Center, published "Family connections to local science issues: how scientists use questions to engage families in personally-relevant learning during science-themed workshops" in the International Journal of Science Education. The article, based on a project funded by the Federal Institute for Museum and Library Services, discusses how to involve scientists and engineers into library and museum program serving rural families. Faculty member Heather Toomey Zimmerman also contributed to the article.

— Jim Stocker, a 2016 alumnus of the special education doctoral program, has been awarded a National Science Foundation grant in the amount of $396,000 for his project, "Virtual Access to STEM Careers (VASC)." The goal of the project is to advance efforts of the Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) program, and better understand and promote practices that increase students' motivation and capacities to pursue STEM careers.
