Anna Gabriel named College of Education's spring 2019 student marshal

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Anna Gabriel has been selected as the student marshal for the Penn State College of Education's spring 2019 commencement ceremony, which will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, May 5, in the Bryce Jordan Center. Gabriel has selected Michelle Knotts, assistant professor of education, to escort her as the college's faculty marshal.

From Worcester, Pennsylvania, Gabriel made dean's list every semester. She has received numerous awards, including the President's Freshman Award in 2016, the President Sparks Award in 2017, and the Evan Pugh Scholar Award in 2018. She is graduating with a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society.

Gabriel was an elementary school tutor in State College Area School District from 2016 to 2018. As a tutor, she coached elementary students in reading and writing and established relationships with young learners in one-on-one sessions. Gabriel also has worked as a gymnastics coach at Spirit Gymnastics Training Center in North Wales, Pennsylvania, since 2011. She served as a THON committee member for the past four years, including on the OPPerations committee in 2016, the Dancer Relations committee in 2017 and 2018, and the Donor and Alumni Relations committee in 2019.

This semester, Gabriel is student teaching at Lenape Middle School in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. She will graduate with a bachelor's degree in secondary education (English/communications option) and minors in psychology and English.

Gabriel's parents, Bob and Sue; sister Kristin; aunt Theresa Glaesser; and uncle Steve Glaesser plan to attend the ceremony. After graduation, Gabriel plans to teach English in the suburban Philadelphia area, with future plans of earning a master's degree in educational administration.
