UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — A student veteran panel discussion, “Stupid Things that Good People Say,” will take place on April 3, as part of Disability Awareness Month at Penn State. The panel will be held from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. in 103 Bank of America Career Services Center at University Park and is free for Penn State students, faculty and staff and members of the community.
The event is one in a series of discussions on micro-aggressions experienced by underrepresented populations, and will be moderated by Laurie Mulvey, executive director of World in Conversation.
The panel — co-sponsored by Student Disability Resources and the Penn State Veterans Organization — will invite Penn State veteran students to share their experiences when encountering civilians’ questions and presumptions of their hidden disabilities. Through open dialogue with veterans and audience members, the goal is to promote an atmosphere where individuals are comfortable discussing and exploring questions about accessibility, equality and inclusion for people with disabilities.
The event coincides with the University’s “Diversability” month to emphasize the various abilities and talents of people with disabilities. Diversability events are sponsored by Penn State's Disability Advisory Group, a consortium of individuals from across the University working together to enhance disability initiatives at Penn State, and the Office of the Vice Provost for Educational Equity.
More than 5,600 Penn State students have direct military ties as either service members, veterans or military dependents across all of the University’s campuses, including Penn State World Campus. Penn State offers several benefits and programs to support the University’s military community.
