March Lion's Pantry events highlight food insecurity at Penn State

March 18, 2019

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Food insecurity on college campuses is a nationwide problem. The Lion’s Pantry is addressing this issue at Penn State through its food pantry and awareness events.

Open House — March 20

The Lion’s Pantry is hosting an open house from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on March 20, at the Lion’s Pantry location on Services Road, between Lion Surplus and the Blue Band Building. The Penn State community is invited to visit the pantry and learn more about the organization and opportunities to get involved.

Canstruction — March 27-28

The Lion’s Pantry will also host an awareness event in March. Canstruction, a unique event that combines creativity and innovation with a focus on hunger relief, will take place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on March 27 and 28, in Room 131 of the HUB-Robeson Center. Canstruction is free and open to the public.

Over two days, four Penn State organizations will build structures made entirely out of cans. At the end of the event, all of the items will be donated to the Lion’s Pantry. By taking part in the event, the organizations, Project Cahir, Penn State Global Brigades, the Lion’s Pantry and the Student Farm Club, are not only providing critical food resources but are also engaging the student body around the issue of hunger at Penn State.

“Canstruction is an exciting event as it brings together a variety of student organizations all with inspiring missions and showcases the power of innovation in fighting hunger,” said Spencer Wallace, Lion’s Pantry outreach coordinator.
