UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State Student Programming Association (SPA) Lectures Committee will bring Karamo Brown to campus for a free lecture at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, in the HUB-Robeson Center’s Alumni Hall.
Karamo Brown is best known for his current host and “Culture Expert” positions on the Netflix reboot of "Queer Eye," where his drive to “fix the inside” for people has helped the show to win multiple Emmy Awards. Brown approaches his teaching on the show by utilizing the many different aspects of his personality as an openly gay man, single father, and psychotherapist. This method of practice has allowed him to touch the lives of many people on the series.
Life did not begin on a public platform for Brown, however. He earned a bachelor's degree at Florida A&M University, which he used to work as a licensed social worker and psychotherapist for a number of years before transferring into the public eye. In 2004, Brown became as the first openly gay, African American in the history of reality television with his role on MTV’s series "The Real World."
Brown also is the co-founder of 6in10.org, an organization which addresses individuals affected by HIV, and received the Human Rights Campaign Visibility Award for 2018, and was invited by the Obama administration to work for policy and legislation on after-school programs for LGBTQ youth.
The lecture is free for all students with a valid Penn State University Park Student Photo ID and is funded by the student-initiated fee.
Tickets are also required for this lecture and are available for Penn State students to pick up starting on Monday, March 11 in the SPA office, 226 HUB-Robeson Center. Non-PSU students can also attend, and tickets for those without a valid Penn State University Student Photo ID are available starting Monday, March 18.
