The Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence will present the following workshop:
How to Employ Critical Thinking in Higher Education Teaching
Wednesday, Feb. 27, noon-1:15 p.m., 315 Rider Building, University Park
Presented by Shaho Saeed, Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow in the College of Education and Professional Affiliate at the Schreyer Institute.
The purpose of this workshop is to show how critical thinking skills and strategies can be employed in higher education. The intended audience is Penn State faculty members and, especially, teaching assistants who wish to improve their teaching experiences.
This workshop will examine four aspects of teaching that can be promoted by critical thinking strategies:
- Critical thinking in curriculum design, or how to design curriculum in accordance with the target students.
- Critical thinking in class and homework activities, or how to enhance students’ motivation to think critically and creatively.
- Critical thinking in examination and students' assessment, or how to evaluate students according to critical thinking strategies.
- Critical thinking in educational social skills, or how to help students engage with cultural diversity and promote tolerance in society.
The workshop activities will adopt an inductive approach by questioning, brainstorming, and comparing positive examples with negative examples in terms of teaching methodologies in different countries and periods. The presenter will include themes related to current theories and the experiences of teaching experts.
