Penn State Hazleton announces Black History Month events

HAZLETON, Pa. — Penn State Hazleton is planning several events to commemorate Black History Month during February.

"Painting with Poets"

On Wednesday, Feb. 6, a program called Painting with Poets will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. in the South Hall Lounge. The program features poems, lyrics and spoken word, by 20th- and 21st-century African-American artists. Students will have the opportunity to participate in the program by listening to the artists’ work and then creating their own paintings and sketches inspired by their observations. Students will then be asked to explain their creations and how they connect to their muse. Students who have created their own poems, lyrics or spoken word art are encouraged to participate.

The True Black History Museum traveling exhibit and presentation

On Wednesday, Feb. 27, the Office of Student Engagement will host a special Black History Month program and lunch. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., a “True Black History Museum,” containing African and African-American artifacts, will be set up in the lobby of the Evelyn Graham Academic Building.

In addition, the curator of the exhibit, Fred Saffold, will hold a presentation in the Black Box Theater of the Slusser/Bayzick Building from 12:20 to 1:15 p.m. on Feb. 27. Lunch will be provided. This program is funded in part by a grant awarded to Student Engagement by Penn State University Park.
