Penn College appoints vice president for academic operations

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Michael J. Reed has been named vice president for academic operations and associate provost at Pennsylvania College of Technology.

Reed joined Penn College in 2014 as assistant dean of the School of Sciences, Humanities and Visual Communications. He became interim dean in 2015 and has been dean of the school since January 2016. Previously, he was head principal at Williamsport Area High School and director of SciTech High School, a STEM magnet school partnering with Harrisburg University of Science and Technology.

In his new role, Reed’s responsibilities include coordinating and aligning initiatives and support services within Academic Affairs, including providing leadership to the outcomes assessment process and oversight of the Academic Affairs and academic school budgets. He also will provide leadership, fiscal planning and staff evaluation for functions related to the Madigan Library and the Office of Assessment, Research and Planning. Reed will serve as a member of President’s Council and as co-chair of Deans’ Council at the college.

While Reed began his new duties on Jan. 7, he continues to offer support as dean of sciences, humanities and visual communications during the transition period while that position is filled.

“Mike’s extensive experience in educational administration, coupled with his proven leadership skills, make him a perfect fit for this position,” said Penn College President Davie Jane Gilmour. “I look forward to the contributions, and the positive energy, that he will bring to this expanded role.”

Reed completed his doctoral studies through Drexel University with a concentration in educational leadership, focusing on innovation, sustainable systems and evidence-based professional development models.

He also holds a master’s degree and school counseling certification from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. His school administrative certifications were awarded through Penn State, and he earned a bachelor of science in secondary education from Clarion University.

A Pittsburgh native, Reed serves as vice chair on the Salvation Army of Williamsport’s Advisory Board, provides mentorship and professional development to K-12 leadership teams throughout the state, and assists multiple youth-development programs throughout the Williamsport community.
