ERIE, Pa. — For a chamber music ensemble, the Beo String Quartet knows how to rock.
They often perform alternative rock hits like Radiohead’s “Creep,” but they’re also committed to their roots. The group is dedicated to performing classic string quartet repertoire in a modern setting.
“What impressed me most was how they got deep inside my music, and put themselves into my sound world to create something new and powerful,” wrote composer Marc Mellits in a review of the quartet.
The Beo String Quartet will bring its modern approach to chamber music to Penn State Behrend on Wednesday, Jan. 16, when they perform as part of Music at Noon: The Logan Series. The performance takes place at noon in McGarvey Commons, in the college’s Reed Union Building. Admission is free, and reserved parking for audience members will be available in the Reed lot.
Formed in 2015, the group has held residencies at music festivals including the Charlotte New Music Festival and Dakota Chamber Music. The group was selected as a Major Winner for the Pittsburgh Concert Society competition in 2016 and recently produced recordings of Beethoven’s String Quartet No.7 in F Major, Op.59 No.1 and Béla Bartók's String Quartet No.4.
Music at Noon: The Logan Series was founded by Mrs. Kay Logan in 1989 and receives major support from the Kay Logan Trust. Additional funding is provided by the Penn State Behrend Student Activity Fee. Music at Noon receives state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
