Penn State Hazleton names students of the month for fall

HAZLETON, Pa. — Penn State Hazleton has announced its students of the month for the fall 2018 semester.

“We congratulate these three students on their hard work academically as well as their commitment to serving others in their communities,” said Daniel Gutierrez, lecturer in administration of justice and chair of the Student Relations Committee.

Students selected by the committee are:

September

Kendra Boyle, a sophomore majoring in environmental resource management, was chosen for the month of September.

On campus, Boyle is the director of tours and recruitment for Lion Ambassadors, a mentor for the STARS (Student Academic Retention and Success) program ,and a student worker in the Office of Admissions. Off campus, she is involved with Toys for Tots.

“Kendra is an excellent representative of Lion Ambassadors as well as the campus,” her nominator wrote. “She shows tremendous attention to detail, professional courtesy and excellent time management. She works hard at all her assignments and responsibilities.”

A graduate of Tamaqua Area High School, Boyle is the daughter of Mark and Kailey Boyle, of Tamaqua. She plans to minor in environmental engineering and dreams of working for the Environmental Protection Agency in the future.

October

Eric Macker, a senior majoring in administration of justice, was selected as the October student of the month.

“He is a full-time student who finds the time and dedication to be involved in his community,” his nominator wrote.

A graduate of Shenandoah Valley Junior/Senior High School, Macker supports numerous community activities in the Shenandoah area. He is a volunteer firefighter for Rescue Hook and Ladder Co. No. 1, where he has served as a safety officer for four years, lieutenant for one year, and vice president for one year, and the Friendship Fire Company of Englewood. He also volunteers with the Shenandoah Community Ambulance Association and is a member of the Shenandoah Police Department Holiday Committee and Shenandoah Holiday Lighting Committee, raising money for the community and helping decorate the downtown during the holiday season.

“He does all this for his community and maintains high academic standards,” his nominator wrote.

Macker is the son of Robert and Mary Kay Macker, of Shenandoah.

November

Nichole Rebarchick, a senior majoring in corporate communication, was named the student of the month for November.

She was nominated for her “leadership, guidance, involvement, dedication and resilience with the Penn State Hazleton campus” and her on-campus involvement.

Rebarchick served as chair of THON at the campus for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years. She holds two part-time jobs and is serving an internship with the Hazleton Area School District’s personnel and benefits department.

“Raising money for THON has many challenges and hurdles to get through, but Nichole was capable of juggling these responsibilities as well as a rigorous course schedule,” her nominator wrote.

A graduate of Hazleton Area High School, she is the daughter of Joseph and Diane Rebarchick, of Hazleton.
