The Freyberger Gallery at Penn State Berks will host an exhibition of more than 25 paintings by Penn State alumnus Steve Scheuring from Jan. 17 to Feb. 21, 2019. An opening reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday Jan. 17, with a snow date of 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday Jan. 24.

One of Scheuring’s most ambitious paintings on view is the 36” x 60” work titled, “We Are.” Scheuring documented 55 iconic – and sometimes surprising – images that anyone associated with Penn State will recognize.

About the artist

Steve Scheuring was accepted for admission to Penn State's University Park campus as a first-year student, but decided to begin his studies at Penn State Berks before completing his degree at University Park. He grew up in Greenfields – Gring’s Mill is behind his childhood home -and walked to campus for classes. He graduated magna cum laude in 1990 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration with a marketing concentration.

Scheuring's fascination with art began at a young age. His early influences were MAD Magazines, comic books, and Frank Frazetta, the legendary science fiction/fantasy artist. "I can remember being 11 years old, sitting in our downstairs rec. room, spending hours copying Frank Frazetta's drawings and paintings.”

Scheuring was a relatively self-taught artist until his last year in college. At that time, he enrolled in a painting class at Penn State's University Park campus, and immediately fell in love with the medium of oil. “The ability of oils to capture subtle contrasts in light and temperature pulled me into a concerted effort to learn, understand and explore this medium,” commented Scheuring.

For the last 12 years, Scheuring submitted his paintings to exhibits and has received various awards and commissions. In addition, he has also illustrated numerous magazine covers, and has had his paintings converted into jigsaw puzzles.

The Freyberger Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays, and noon to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. For more information, contact Marilyn Fox, gallery director, at 610-396-6140 or mjf14@psu.edu.
