UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Martin Luther King Jr. Student Committee announced today (Dec. 3) the theme for the 2019 MLK Jr. Commemoration Week at Penn State.
“Where Do We Go From Here: A Tradition of Resistance” will celebrate King’s life and legacy throughout the week of Jan. 21-25.
“We are extremely excited for the 2018-2019 commemoration year,” said Awaly Diallo, executive director of the student committee. “As we pay homage to the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King's assassination through this theme, we will pull from the tradition of resistance to evoke a sense of proactiveness and student activism that reflects the strength and courage of the civil rights movement.”
The student committee also announced two student scholarships, named in honor of two prominent civil rights activists — American novelist and social critic James Baldwin, and journalist, educator and civil rights leader Ida B. Wells — and a faculty/staff award named in honor of civil rights and human rights activist Ella Baker.
