Inaugural Science Achievement Graduate Fellows Lecture scheduled for Nov. 29

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Alicia Carriquiry, distinguished professor of statistics and director of the Center for Statistics and Applications in Forensic Evidence at Iowa State University, will present the inaugural Science Achievement Graduate Fellows (SAGF) Lecture at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, in Berg Auditorium (100 Huck Life Sciences Building) on the Penn State University Park campus.

This free public lecture, titled “Statistics and the Fair Administration of Justice,” will be preceded by a public reception at 3:30 p.m. in the auditorium lobby and is sponsored by the Department of Statistics and the Penn State Eberly College of Science.

Carriquiry's lecture will focus on a Bayesian statistical framework for assessing the probative value of forensic evidence, with two examples — one using the chemical composition of glass fragments and the other using information about the surface topography of bullet lands (marks on a bullet that allow it to be matched to the gun from which it was fired) — to illustrate its application.

About the speaker

Carriquiry researches applications of statistics in human nutrition, bioinformatics, forensic sciences, and traffic safety and has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles in corresponding academic journals.

In addition to her work at Iowa State, she serves on the U.S. Department of State's Overseas Security Advisory Council subcommittee on Materials and Trace Evidence, has spoken at the International Conference on Forensic Inference and Statistics, and was recently named to the National Academy of Medicine and elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

About the SAGF Lectures

The Science Achievement Graduate Fellows (SAGF) Lectures feature distinguished speakers in science and mathematics and are an outreach of the SAGF scholarship program in the Eberly College of Science at Penn State.

Established in 2018, the SAGF scholarships are awarded annually to outstanding graduate students seeking a doctoral degree in each of the college's seven departments and who are interested in the advancement of women in the sciences and related fields. The SAGF scholarships recognize students who have a record of significant professional achievements in their field and who are role models for other students in the college. Each scholarship is named in honor of an outstanding woman scientist or mathematician who not only made groundbreaking discoveries but also blazed the trial for others who have followed in their footsteps. The program fellows host two distinguished lectures a year to honor the women scientists for whom the scholarships are named.
