CommRadio updates app approach to enhance interactivity

CommRadio, the internet-based radio station housed in the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications at Penn State, has updated its smartphone app, making the station that features student work more interactive.

CommRadio has joined Radio FX, which focuses on supporting college radio stations and allows users to interact via polls and social media, and offers a calendar of station events on the app.

First launched in 2003, CommRadio has grown from a staff of 13 students to more than 150. Those students work on teams focused on news, sports, production, sales, social media and management. The station produces a variety of public-affairs and talk shows, broadcasts a nightly newscast and provides coverage of Penn State sports.

In addition, CommRadio enables students interested in broadcasting and radio to get involved as soon as they arrive on campus as first-year students. That access to airtime and repetition enables students to hone skills that lead to careers.

Over the years, CommRadio students have won numerous state and national awards for their work while alumni have moved into roles with broadcast outlets, large and small, across the nation. Students who have combined their classroom experience with CommRadio have started careers at places like the Big Ten Network, CBS Sports, ESPN and the SEC Network.

The Radio FX app is available for both Android and iOS devices through the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. Once downloaded, users may select CommRadio and bookmark it as a favorite.
